The open road in Cornwall - grant by SSIT

Welcome to our Summer 2016 newsletter

With summer sunshine starting to appear, the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust is delighted to help people get out and about by making grants for lighter-weight wheelchairs, power add-ons like eMotion wheels and the Smartdrive, and a wide range of handcycles and hybrid cycles like the one pictured above.  We paid or promised 18 grants in 2015, and since then have approved another 14. We have helped people progress in specialist sports (wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball), worked alongside the Motability scheme to help with wheelchair storage/hoists for car drivers, and provided adjustable beds that not only meet a basic clinical need but also work better for family life and independence.  Some of our grants are profiled on our website, so please visit to read more.

None of this would be possible without the generous donations and fundraising support of many people and organisations.  All of the money that SSIT gives out as grants, has to first of all come in to the charity as a donation.  Some special thanks this time to Irwin Mitchell Solicitors (read more about their help in some of the articles below); the Wells Rotary and Dr Andy Coulson, holding a fantastic Tramps Night Out party and fundraising; Wincanton Golf and Racecourse;  trustee Paul Smart who held a party for SSIT; and Gerald Simonds Ltd.

Read on to find out what else has been happening, and more about what's coming soon.  Don't forget to return to the newsletter if you follow any of the weblinks!

Wincanton Golf Tournament and Evening Racing

Every year, Wincanton Golf holds a charity tournament and we were thrilled that this year 10 teams of golfers generously competed in aid of SSIT.  The day was topped off by evening racing at this historic Jockeyclub racecourse in warm and sunny early May.

Netball for SSIT

Organised by solicitors Irwin Mitchell, the second annual netball tournament in aid of the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust took place in April at Ferndown Leisure Centre.  Teams of ladies (and gentlemen) represented the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre (pictured), Number 18 Chambers, College Chambers, and Irwin Mitchell (Southampton).  Think you would like to organise a sports or social fundraising event for SSIT?  Read on for ideas....

Our Tenth Anniversary

It all started for SSIT ten years ago, with an idea by Sally Mathieson (front row).  150 guests joined founders, patrons and trustees to celebrate the charity's help for people with spinal cord injury and learn about the fundraising Wheel Appeal focus for 2016.

Transfer practise car DOCSTC 2016
How to practise the transfer from wheelchair to car seat

A key skill needed by many people with spinal cord injury, is moving from their wheelchair into a car seat.  To help people discover what works for them, SSIT arranged to install a special static "transfer practise car" at DOCSTC Salisbury, with help from local garage Bodytech Services.  This popular resource helps patients practise and gain confidence ready for their discharge from hospital.

Stu and Scott at ISUG 2016
Sporting Round Up

We were very proud to again sponsor the sports kit for Team Salisbury at this year's Inter Spinal Unit Games (ISUG) held at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in April.  Big congratulations to everyone for taking second place in the team championship, with an individual victory for Scott Gerred (Right) in the Shooting event.  Also pictured is Stu Wright, an instructor at the Games and who has earned his GB colours for shooting since receiving support from SSIT two years' ago.  We also want to thank the following brilliant fundraisers:

  • Andrew Manders who ran the London Marathon 2016
  • Wincanton Racecourse punters for donating at our exit gate collection on a very cold March afternoon
  • Dr Omar Siddique, in the Surrey Half Marathon 2016
  • All the Netballers in this year's tournament for SSIT
  • Golfers at Wincanton Charity Golf 2016
  • All our British London 10K runners, in the race on 10 July 2016 - Good Luck!
British London 10K race entry open until 1 July
Cheese Skittles anyone?

We are always amazed at the variety and ingenuity of sporting challenges undertaken to raise funds for SSIT, and never more so than the incredible "cheese skittles" that featured during the evening racing at Wincanton Racecourse on 5 May. Pictured here, Jeremy Barber bowls a truckle of Barber's Cheese at the SSIT skittle alley which was run by volunteers from Irwin Mitchell's Bristol office.  On a glorious sunny evening, generous punters queued to have a go, raising much-needed funds to help boost SSIT's equipment grants.
