Superhero Tri – Para Sports

We had a truly epic day on Saturday 17th August at the Superhero Tri at Dorney Lake Windsor. The Superhero Tri is part of the Superhero series – the brainchild of former Paralympian Sophia Warner – is big, bold, gutsy and is the UK’s one and only disability sports series for the Everyday Superhero. The Superhero Tri offers three epic distances and three ways to take part (solo, team or sidekick team race), meaning a competitor can do as little or as much as they wish, with as little or as much support as they need. The Superhero series is fully inclusive to anyone, of any ability. The organisers go as far as saying “If you want flippers or floats in the water or need to use your powerchair, we make it possible. In fact, as far as we’re concerned anything goes.”

All our incredible Superhero soloists and our team entrants found their super power and crossed the finish line with superhuman strength, stamina and smiles, not to mention the costumes!

We were very proud of our heroes and wish to congratulate them on their outstanding achievements. So big thanks to Jo Birley who took part in the Full & Sprint Tri, Andy Thomson in the Full. Grace McGowan with her incredible ‘ReWalk’ in the Half Tri, she did amazing well, plus special thanks to Nick her Sidekick. Our Sprint Superhero Teams were, Stu Vinter and his ‘Superpower’ team and Myfanwy Foster with the amazing ‘Family Fosters’.

The Distances:

The Sprint consists of a 150 meter swim in Dorney Lake, followed by a 3km bike ride and finally a 1km run/push/wheel/walk, with participants passing the baton (an electronic timer) to the next team member.

The Half is a 400m swim, 10k cycle and 2.5m run/push/wheel or walk. Grace was outstanding on her ReWalk on the final section.

The Full is the Paralympic distance, 150m swim or boat pull, 20k cycle and 5k run/push/wheel or walk.

To make the event even more ‘super’, this year it was sponsored by Marvel. Safe to say there were many everyday superheroes dressed as Marvel characters on the day!

As with previous years, the event attracted celebrities and sports favourites – many of whom were competing in the Celebrity Superhero Team race, which ran on the morning of the event. From Paralympians to Invictus champions, London Marathon winners and TV presenters, the celebrity team race was a truly star-studded affair.

Join us at Winter Wonderwheels on Sunday 1st December

The next event in the Superhero Series is the Winter Wonderwheels on Sunday 1st December, where everyday Superheroes are invited to cycle, walk, run, push (or anything in between) around Dorney Lake. With 1km, 5km and 10km challenges. If you are interested we would love to hear from you, there really is something for everyone.
