On Saturday 17th June at 6am, 22 enthusiastic cyclists left 5 Rivers Leisure Centre, Salisbury to take on the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust ‘Big Bike Challenge’ covering 200 miles across 3 counties in one day. Competing in this challenge were 3 Doctors, an Army Officer an Aircraft Engineer plus one Policeman to name a few. Leading the group out of Salisbury was Andy Beckett Chair of SRAMcc. Stops and refuelling points had been organised starting with Breakfast after 35 miles in Wincanton, then on to Cheddar at the 66 mile mark for water and a snack before a quick cycle sprint up the Gorge. Ice creams were waiting by the time they reached 81 miles at Burnham-On-Sea for a group photo on the sea front. The temperature had increased into low 80’s by the time the cyclists reached 112 miles for lunch at Muchelney. After some nourishment and shade, it was on to Higher Ansty for quick snack before heading down towards the coast to Christchurch 173 miles for a well deserved Pie & Mash supper before the last stretch home. Finally around midnight all 22 cyclists arrived back after 200 miles at 5 Rivers, elated & exhausted. Chair of SRAMcc Andy Beckett said “I have done this route for the last 3 years around the same time of year with only a handful of cyclists but it was a bigger challenge this year as we had more cyclists and hotter weather. However it was a really great day and we were well looked after with a variety of high energy foods & plenty of water which was just as well, as we consumed 25 gallons throughout the day. All the competitors thoroughly enjoyed their day and above all we were raising funds for this great charity”
