The visionary garden designer Sir Roy Strong joined us on Friday for a sell-out talk on his Herefordshire garden.
Guests travelled to Yeo Valley in Somerset from as far afield as Edinburgh to hear Sir Roy’s fascinating talk on garden design, and to see the work he has done on transforming The Laskett Gardens. He talked of the need for structure, surprise and vistas in a garden – of looking for the ‘spirit of a garden’ – and the importance of always having a fresh eye. Forty years after creating the gardens, Sir Roy has been busy cutting down trees and remodelling hedges to embrace to Herefordshire landscape, re-siting ornaments and renewing planting … and he’ll be 80 next year. ‘Change is invigorating’ he said, and we couldn’t agree more!
Our thanks go to Sir Roy for the most entertaining and enjoyable of talks – it was a real treat to be able to host him, and we are so grateful for the time he gave.
We are also indebted to the wonderful team at Yeo Valley for hosting the day and for looking after our guests so well (and coping with a power cut!). Lunch was delicious, the Organic Gardens look gorgeous and tea and cake was the finishing touch! All in all, a perfect day fundraising for SSIT.
