Physiotherapy is an integral part of the rehabilitation process for patients with a spinal cord injury. During the week, patients at the Salisbury spinal centre will take part in hydrotherapy sessions in the swimming pool and fitness sessions in the gym and we’ve just provided the staff with new uniform as a way of making the sessions more light-hearted and enjoyable.
The hydrotherapy sessions – Work out Wednesday – are an excellent way of improving cardio vascular fitness and most patients who take part will continue swimming in the community after they are discharged from the spinal unit.
Meanwhile, the Friday gym sessions – Fitness Friday – consist of specific circuit exercises and a game and it is hoped that more sports will be introduced including wheelchair rugby and tennis.
The new uniforms have already made a positive impact on the group sessions as they help create a fun and motivating atmosphere.
